An academic career clearly beckoned and, in 1970, he was appointed to a lectureship at Newcastle University. Bill Clinton was one of his fellow students. Born on American Independence Day, Ben was educated at Rokeby school, in Wimbledon, south-west London, Marlborough College and Worcester College, Oxford, where he took a degree in politics, philosophy and economics and a BPhil in politics. ![]()
